42 Hours and No Cruise Control

Matt is a great husband and took it upon himself to move all of our junk down to Alabama.  I would fly down the following week with one bag and Yvonne.  The plan was that Matt would leave Thursday August 6 drive to Denver and sleep in Longmont with my Aunt Jozianne and Uncle Brian.  Friday August 7 Matt would drive to Kansas city and stay with my Brother Spencer and his wife Whitney.  Saturday August 8 Matt would drive the rest of the way to Birmingham and arrive about 6 pm with plenty of time for the Elder's Quorum to help him unload the truck...did that happen?

Let me remind you of the unluckiness of Matthew and traveling to far away places.

  •  Havasupai trip of 2013: Broken down car that added 5+ hours to our travelling
  •  Thailand 2014: Broken down plane that added 24+ hours of travelling (stuck in Rochester, Minnesota might I add)
  • Birmingham the 1st time 2015 (see first blog post): Delayed flight/bad weather that caused -8 hours of sleep
  • Montana 2015: Broken transmission that delayed us 48 hours
All accounts have been since we have been married so I am not sure of all the unlucky times he had before our Era.

Matt had a great first day of driving to Denver (well after it took over an hour at the Budget Rental Co. to actually get the truck and car trailer).  Matt got to spend the evening with My Aunt and Uncle and Cousin.  They fed him homemade p.f. Cha
ng lettuce wraps (I'm jealous I missed this part of the trip).  He took everything nice and easy and was able to leave for Kansas city the next day early in the morning.

Friday afternoon while driving, a man in another vehicle flagged him to pull over.  Matt pulled over and the man explained to Matt that a tire on the car trailer was about to blow.  Matt was so glad the nice gentleman flagged him down!  The next exit was a few miles away so Matt slowly made his way to the exit and found a person in town that changed the tire quick. Matt said it was "like NASCAR"!  The mechanic informed Matt that the other side of the trailer had a problem too (bad hub).  Matt decided to drive extra carefully to Kansas City where he would call Budget and have them fix the trailer or get the trailer swapped out for a different one.

Matt did arrive safely to Kansas city just in time to run a night 10k trail run with Spencer (first things first right? gotta have your priorities in order...) A single track, dark, muddy, hilly trail was enjoyed by both.  Budget was then called and Matt explained what was wrong with the trailer.  They said there would be a man out soon to look at it.
So they (Matt, Spencer and Whitney) waited, talked, waited, and talked (my sister-in-law Whitney had joined the boys by now and she can TALK -meaning it in a good way!!!) and finally at 2:30 in the morning the "mechanic" showed up, looked at it and said he couldn't fix it. Matt could call in the morning for a new trailer to be brought to him.

Saturday morning Matt got on the phone first thing and talked to several people asking them to bring a new trailer.  For some reason no one could (or wanted??) to help him.  And apparently no one had a budget car trailer in a 30 mile radius of Kansas City... eventually (3 pm) a new trailer came.  Hooray!! By now Matt was tired of talking to people and tired from a late night so he decided to spend the day in Kansas and have a fresh start Sunday.

The new trailer was in worse condition than the first one!! Matt tried to tell the guy but he assured Matt "it's not my problem-I just deliver the trailer".  It was 11 hours to Birmingham and the boys decided that he might make it.  Early Sunday Matt started off once again.  He was entering the Bible Belt and listened to bible studies on the radio all morning.  So by the time a tire blew he couldn't even swear (I was the one swearing=WTH?!) He waited in Missouri on the side of the road in 105 f for 4 hours for a Budget person to come change his tire (Matt had him bring 2!).  Matt made it to Birmingham Sunday night...Well Monday morning Aug 10 at 12:30 am! But he made it! So glad Matt did the dirty work and moved all of our stuff! I flew into Birmingham on Wednesday the 12th afternoon with little problems (a mixed up seat on the airplane was about all):).  Not to mention Yvonne was an angel on the flights!
